NSU's Homecoming Friday is Fun-Filled

Article Image Friday is one of the busiest days for Northeastern State University's homecoming, "Welcome Back to Fabulous Northeastern State."

Among the events held Oct. 8 are the Green and White Golf Classic, Alumni Champagne Bingo and Come Home to the Dome. The events are sponsored by the NSU Alumni Association.

“Each of these events, and homecoming in general, are all about getting alumni, friends and supporters of the university back to Tahlequah to celebrate Northeastern and to reconnect with old friends and with the institution,” said Daniel Johnson, director of alumni services. "The Association offers these different events to appeal to the many different tastes of the alumni community.”

The day begins with the Green and White Golf Classic at 10 a.m. at Cherry Springs Golf Course. A golf event has been a part of NSU homecoming for 13 years; however, it has a new name this year.

“An event with a tradition like this golf event needs an identity and the Green and White Golf Classic fits perfectly,” said Johnson. “We see teams made up of alumni from fraternities and campus groups, corporate teams and teams made up of old friends who haven’t seen each other for years.”

Continuing the day is Alumni Champagne Bingo in the University Center Rozell Ballroom from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. This is the fifth year champagne bingo has been a part of homecoming festivities. It features creative bingo games and prizes.

“This event tends to appeal to the spouses of our golfers, though it is certainly not limited to that audience,” said Johnson. “Champagne bingo has been our fastest growing event in the last couple of years and we expect an even larger audience this year.”

Ending the day is Come Home to the Dome, presented by Keetoowah Cherokee Casino, in the indoor practice facility at Doc Wadley Stadium at 8 p.m. Come Home to the Dome is also in its fifth year at NSU; however, this is the first year the event is on a Friday. The event features live music and entertainment, food and dancing.

“From an alumni perspective, this will be a great way to wrap up the first night of homecoming and the Alumni Association is appealing to all the groups and organizations out there to begin their reunions at Come Home to the Dome,” said Johnson. “It’s a fun, casual environment to catch up with friends from the past and make some new ones.”
