Dr. Steve Turner was named the 19th president of Northeastern State University Monday by the Regional University System of Oklahoma Board of Regents. He will assume the presidency on Jan. 1, 2012.

Dr. Turner, 50, currently serves as Vice President for Administration and Finance and Executive Assistant to the President for Governmental Relations and Economic Development at East Central University in Ada, Okla. He has served in that position since 2007.

Dr. Turner began his career in higher education in 1989 at ECU and for the last 22 years he has served in many capacities, including campus police officer, tenured professor, and Chair of the Department of Human Resources.

“The Regents were impressed with Dr. Turner’s broad experience in finance, academics, and external affairs,” said Michael W. Mitchel, Chair of the RUSO Board. “The Board of Regents has complete confidence in his ability to lead NSU to continue to provide an excellent education to students while working collaboratively in the institution to meet the needs of Northeastern Oklahoma.”

“I am honored to be selected by the Board of Regents of the Regional University System of Oklahoma to serve as the President of NSU,” Dr. Turner said. “The NSU community has strong and vibrant programs and a capable faculty and staff.

Turner Named to NSU Alumni Association Board

Michael Turner, business and community liaison for Tulsa Job Corps and holder of two degrees from Northeastern State University, has been named to the board of directors for NSU’s Alumni Association.

Explaining his decision to join the board, Turner said, “I love NSU. The opportunity to serve the alumni board is an honor and privilege. We are a group of committed individuals who share a desire to move the university forward.”

As an NSU student, Turner was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and a varsity cheerleader. He graduated from NSU in 1991 with a bachelor’s degree in industrial operations and earned his master’s degree in 1998.

Daniel Johnson, director of alumni services, said Turner brings an established reputation for effective administration to the board.

“Turner was also a great student and has that personal relationship with the university,” Johnson said. “His wife is a former alumni director for NSU, so he has a great awareness of the opportunities and challenges associated with keeping our alumni community engaged. We look forward to the benefit of his knowledge and expertise.”

Turner lives in Tulsa with his wife Lisa, an NSU alumna, and their two daughters, Madison and Megan.

NSU Soccer Complex Renamed Dr. Dan F. DeLoache Field

Article ImageThe coach who founded the soccer program at Northeastern State will be forever linked to the sport he loves.

Dr. Dan DeLoache was honored Oct. 23 during a post-game ceremony officially changing the name of the NSU Soccer Complex. A new brick arch entrance proudly proclaims the home of NSU soccer as Dr. Dan F. DeLoache Field.

“I was just so overwhelmed and humbled by the whole thing,” DeLoache said.

“It was a welcome recognition for a gentleman who put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into building a soccer program,” said Daniel Johnson, director of alumni services and a former player who was open in his support of the complex being named for DeLoache. “The day of activities was wonderful because it brought back a lot of alumni players who had not been back to campus in a number of years. It allowed us to reminisce and pay homage to Coach DeLoache.”

In 1981, DeLoache presented the NSU administration with a plan to become the first state-supported institution in Oklahoma to add men’s soccer as a varsity sport. Using his experience establishing the youth Indian Nations Soccer Club in Cherokee County, he created the university’s soccer program with assistants Dr. Lee Quiett and Jim Malone.
