NSU Alumnus Jones Leads Community Center Effort

Every neighborhood deserves a Pastor Willard Jones—someone who embraces the community, identifies its needs and formulates innovative methods to meet them.

Jones, pastor of Greater Cornerstone Baptist Church and a 1974 graduate of Northeastern State University, is a spiritual and civic leader in Tulsa's South Haven neighborhood. He is receiving recognition for his efforts to establish a community center in west Tulsa. TulsaPeople magazine cited him in November 2011 as one of the city's "Unsung Heroes."

The innovation of the $6.9 million community center is its scope. It won't be a traditional multipurpose facility where people exercise or gather for meetings.

"When people think of a community center, they often think of a rec center," Jones said. "That is not the case with this facility. This isn't where you go to play basketball."

Instead, the community center will house multiple services targeted toward low-income residents. The 20,000 square feet will contain medical and dental clinics and social, vocational and educational programs. Domestic Violence Intervention Services, Family and Children's Services and Goodwill Industries of Tulsa will have branch facilities in the center. It opens in July 2012.

NSU to Dedicate Redmen Heritage Wall on April 21

With construction nearing completion, the Redmen Heritage Wall at Northeastern State University will be officially dedicated during a ceremony April 21, 2012, at 2 p.m.

The dedication will be part of NSU's Green and White Weekend festivities that include award ceremonies for academic achievement and the annual Green and White football game which concludes spring drills. The wall ceremony precedes the game.

"This is a project which has heartfelt meaning to many people," said Daniel Johnson, director of alumni services. "We look forward to giving it a formal dedication and sharing it with all our alumni and friends who have been a part of its construction."

The Redmen Heritage Wall, funded mostly by donations, commemorates NSU's Redmen era and the former site of Gable Field. It also honors students who attended as Redmen. The remaining wall of the old Gable Field northeast of the John Vaughan Library is the project's cornerstone.

The ceremony is open to the public. Those making contributions to the wall's construction will receive invitations.

NSU Dean of Education Readies for Next Chapter

Article ImageAfter a nearly 40-year career in education, Dr. Kay Lallier Grant is ready to stay up too late on a school night and read a wonderful book. Northeastern State University’s dean of the College of Education recently retired at the end of the Fall 2011 semester. Grant has held the position since 2001 (served as interim dean from 2001-2003).

The only thing that stood between her and that wonderful book was one more commencement. On Dec. 16 Grant took to the Tahlequah stage to address the next generation of educators during the College of Education fall commencement ceremonies.

“Most immediately I want to take a deep breath and rediscover what I want to be when I grow up,” said Grant of her retirement plans. “I want to laugh more and spend time with family, travel and do some writing.”

“If my dreams come true I’ll write books for children and visit schools to talk to them about reading and writing.”

The award-winning educator/administrator and published author caught the education bug as a psychology major.

“I was fascinated with studying how children go from “not knowing” to “knowing” and what I could do to facilitate that process,” said Grant. “That led me to pursuing certification to work with preschool children.”
