NSU Looking to Close Ground on UCO in Alumni Membership Challenge

Through the end of 2010, Northeastern State University is trailing rival University of Central Oklahoma in the President's Cup Alumni Association Membership Challenge. The President's Cup is a friendly competition to increase alumni association membership.

"To win the competition, we must post the largest percent membership gain in our alumni association," said Daniel Johnson, director of alumni services at NSU. "We're excited that we've increased our membership by more than 20 percent, but we still trail UCO by four percentage points."

The alumni associations at NSU and UCO kicked off the membership competition during the NSU-UCO football game at Doc Wadley Stadium on Oct 23. The competition was started retroactively at the beginning of the fiscal year on July 1, 2010 and runs through June 30, 2011. The challenge is named for the trophy NSU and UCO compete for each autumn on the gridiron.

"We are down but most definitely not out," Johnson said. "We are certainly within reach of making up the ground and surpassing UCO."

10 Centurions Named in Honor of Founders Day 2011

Article Image

In celebration of Northeastern State University's Founders Day 2011, the university will add 10 names to its list of NSU Centurions. Founders Day commemorates the day the Oklahoma legislature purchased the Cherokee National Female Seminary and created the Northeastern State Normal School on March 6, 1909.

An annual tradition established during the 2009 Centennial Founders Day Celebration, the Centurion honor is given to members of the NSU family—alumni, faculty, staff and students, whether past or present—who impacted the life of the nominator, the Northeastern community or the public at large.

This year’s Centurions will be honored during a special luncheon held Friday, March 4 in the University Center Rozell Ballroom in Tahlequah at 11:30 a.m. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under.

For more information or to purchase tickets to the Centurion luncheon, call (918) 444-2018.

NSU to Induct Three into Athletic Hall of Fame

Robert Jackson, Zdena Rebekova and Rodger Lefler will enter the Northeastern State University Athletic Hall of Fame.

Robert Jackson was a four-year football letterman for the Redmen (1958-1961) and started every game for four seasons. Jackson played on both sides of the ball -- quarterback, halfback and defensive back --- and earned All-Oklahoma Collegiate Conference honors four consecutive seasons.

Zdena Rebekova was a four-year letter winner for the Women's tennis team (1996-2000) and turned in one of the best careers in NSU history. She graduated from NSU in 2000.

Rodger Lefler was a four-year letterman for the Redmen in basketball where he became a three-year starter and captain of the 1961-62 squad. Lefler was chosen All-Oklahoma Collegiate Conference in 1960-61 and 1961-62 and led the team in scoring and rebounding as a senior in 1961-62. He graduated from NSU in 1962

The event was originally scheduled for Feb. 5, but due to the recent winter storm, it had to be postponed.  Details on the date and time of the rescheduled event are not available at this time, but will be released soon.

NSU Alumna Glenn-Summitt named Development Director, Foundation Executive Director

Peggy Glenn-Summitt, director of programs for The Senior Source in Dallas, will join Northeastern State University as its new Director of Development and Executive Director of the NSU Foundation.

A 1990 summa cum laude graduate of NSU who received the President's Leadership Class scholarship, Glenn-Summitt called returning to campus "a dream come true."

"My education and subsequent positions as a nonprofit manager and an attorney would not have been possible without the assistance of the NSU President's Leadership Class scholarship, and I look forward to making sure those types of opportunities continue to support and inspire current and future NSU students," she said.

NSU President Don Betz said Glenn-Summitt brings a unique blend of qualities to excel in the directorships.

"She brings excellent experiences managing large, complex non-profit programs to this position, and her success as an attorney also speaks to her clarity of thinking," Betz said. "Coupled with her grassroots fund-raising experience and public speaking activities, she will make an immediate impact. As an alumna, she brings an extraordinary passion for NSU, and that adds a dimension to her conversations with alumni and friends that will make a real difference in their commitment to giving."
