Emerald Ball Set for Dec. 10

Five Distinguished Alumni will be honored at the 14th annual Emerald Ball at Northeastern State University.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 10 in the University Center Sen. Herb Rozell Ballroom on the Tahlequah campus. The Emerald Ball is produced by the NSU Alumni Association.

“This is the highlight of the Alumni Association’s holiday season,” said Daniel Johnson, director of alumni services. “We look forward to the Emerald Ball each year as the formal recognition of our outstanding alumni honorees. We are really excited about those we are honoring this year.”

Selected by the Alumni Association’s Board of Directors, the Distinguished Alumni are Mary Battenfield, Joe Sears and Dr. Barbara Staggs, and the honoree for Outstanding Young Alumna is Carrie Underwood. Former state attorney general Drew Edmondson is the honoree for the President’s Award for Community Service.

Tickets are $75 for Alumni Association members and $90 for non-members. The event is open to the public.

Corporations and organizations may purchase corporate tables for $1,500. Half the price is tax-deductible as a charitable donation to the Alumni Association and its outreach efforts.

“The Alumni Association invites the community to participate in an evening of fine dining and dancing,” Johnson said. “We want everyone to help us celebrate the wonderful accomplishments and contributions of our five alumni honorees for 2011”.

Tickets may be purchased online at www.nsualumni.com or by calling the Office of Alumni Services at (918) 458-2143.

Battenfields Endow Scholarship for NSU College of Education Students

Article ImageThanks to the generosity of one of Northeastern State University’s most active alumni couples, candidates in the College of Education soon can apply for a scholarship to train in foreign countries.

Mary and Dr. Harold Battenfield have committed $25,000 to establish the Mary and Harold Battenfield Scholarship Endowment. Once the fund is mature, one scholarship will be awarded each year to a College of Education candidate who has been approved to participate in an international internship. This will help defray travel expenses for the student.

Mary Battenfield, a 1960 graduate, was a member of the Alumni Association board and served as its president in 2008. In Tulsa, she is active in Pink Ribbon activities to support breast cancer patients, survivors and their families. She helps coordinate activities and correspondence for NSU’s most cohesive alumni group, the Nifty Fifties.

Harold Battenfield, a 1959 graduate, is a retired orthopedic surgeon. With his friend Dr. John Carletti, he permanently endowed the Battenfield-Carletti Entrepreneurial Lecture Series which invites NSU alumni to campus to share their entrepreneurial experiences with students. Harold also holds four medical patents.

Harold was named an NSU Distinguished Alumnus in 2002 and Mary a Distinguished Alumna in 2011. Both were named NSU Centurions in 2010.

Contributions to the endowment are welcome. For information about making donations call the NSU Foundation at (918) 458-2143 or visit www.nsugiving.com.

Alumni Association Organizes Snow-Tube Gathering

Article ImageSnow may not yet be falling in most of Oklahoma, but it is not too early to plan winter activities.

Northeastern State University Alumni Association invites families to attend snow tubing at Bricktown on Dec. 4 from 2-4 p.m. The gathering will be Chesapeake Energy Snow Tubing at RedHawks Field in Bricktown. RedHawks Field is located on S. Mickey Mantle Drive in Oklahoma City.

"This is a unique activity and it is something different from anything the Alumni Association has done in the past," said Daniel Johnson, director of alumni services.

Riders can slide to second base from the upper deck on a man-made snow hill. A smaller slope is available for children and the more cautious. An individual must be at least four feet tall to take a tube down the large slope.

Tickets are $10 per person for the session and the concessions stand will be open and offering sandwiches, desserts and hot beverages.

For information or to purchase tickets call the Office of Alumni Relations at (918) 458-2143. Tickets can also be purchased online on the NSU Alumni web site.
