NSU Edges UCO in Alumni Membership Challenge

Following a year of friendly competition to boost membership in their respective alumni associations, Northeastern State University posted a greater percentage increase than the University of Central Oklahoma to win the President’s Cup Alumni Association Membership Challenge.

NSU received a 38 percent increase in new paid memberships to edge out UCO’s 35 percent.

“We are delighted that we’ve won the challenge,” said Daniel Johnson, NSU director of alumni services. “It was a close race. NSU added 651 new members through a series of efforts. We appealed to alumni through direct mail and e-marketing, Facebook advertising and by personally asking alumni to join whenever the opportunity presented itself.”

With NSU’s victory, the UCO Alumni Association will host the NSU alumni board and staff at the NSU-UCO football game Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. in Edmond.

“We will enjoy a pre-game barbecue in their VIP suite which will be decorated splendidly in green and white for the day,” Johnson said. “We will have a trophy presentation before the game and enjoy their hospitality for the afternoon.”

NSU Alumni Association Awards 2011-2012 Legacy Scholarships

Article ImageFour freshmen at Northeastern State University are recipients of the 2011-12 Legacy Scholarships, awarded through the Alumni Association and the Office of Alumni and Development.

Receiving scholarships for $1,250 are Elizabeth Jones of Muldrow and Breanna Thorman of Pryor. Jordan Landsaw of Hulbert and Lauren Rosson of Muskogee each received scholarships of $750.

The scholarship is awarded to incoming freshmen with family who attended NSU in the past. Applicants must have a cumulative high school grade-point average of at least 3.0. Applications are reviewed by a committee drawn from the Alumni Association’s board of directors. The committee determines the number of scholarships, the amounts to award and the recipients. This year’s committee was chaired by Barbara Abercrombie, director of human resources at the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa.

Daniel Johnson, director of alumni services, said the support and generosity of Alumni Association members, particularly those with life memberships, allows the association to offer the Legacy Scholarships.

“A portion of life member dues provides a significant proportion of the resources that continue to build the Legacy Scholarship endowment,” he said. “This program fits squarely with the Alumni Association’s mission, and the board of directors is thrilled to be able to deliver a tangible benefit that assists families of our alumni.”

2011 RiverHawks Football Preview

If there is a single word to describe Northeastern State University's football outlook for 2011, it would most definitely be "transition."

Head coach Kenny Evans has spent his entire four-year career attempting to get to this point. Through recruiting, and implementing a system to foster stability and discipline, the RiverHawks appear to be on the verge of returning to the days when football reigned supreme on this campus.

This will also be a transition year for the football team as a whole. For the first time since 1929, Northeastern State will not be affiliated with a conference and will be classified as an independent in NCAA Division II. However, NSU could play its way into the postseason with its rugged 11-game slate, something that hasn't happened since 2000. Highlighting the 2011 schedule is a Sept. 3 date where the University of Texas-San Antonio will play their first-ever football game. The Roadrunners' head coach is Northeastern State alumnus, and former University of Miami coach, Larry Coker.

NSU Begins Construction on 'Cappi' Wadley Reading Clinic

Construction is underway on Northeastern State University’s Cappitola “Cappi” Wadley Center for Reading and Technology, funded by a portion of the university’s first $1 million private donation.

Housed in the third floor of Bagley Hall, the Wadley Center will provide a reading clinic where young students can overcome reading deficiencies and educators can become better prepared to help them learn to read.

“The center will serve a dual purpose,” said Dr. Kay Grant, dean of the College of Education. “For the community, it will offer outreach tutoring to children and families with low literacy skills. From the university’s academic perspective, the center will help our graduate and undergraduate students develop their instructional abilities to help children and adults enhance their literacy.”

Gregg Wadley, Northeastern class of 1969, and his wife, Dr. Betsy Brackett, pledged the milestone gift in December 2009 in honor of Wadley’s mother, Cappitola “Cappi” Wadley, who passed away in 2005.

Anita Thompson, development and grants officer for the College of Education, said donations to support the Wadley Center are still welcome and needed.

“The cost of construction is covered, but the NSU Foundation is still seeking contributions for furnishings, technology, books and a facility maintenance endowment,” she said. “There are also still many naming opportunities available in a variety of price ranges.”

Those interested in donating to the Cappitola “Cappi” Wadley Center for Reading and Technology can call Thompson at (918) 444-3751, or visit the NSU Foundation website for more information.

Northeastern Launches New College for Adult Learners

Article Image

Northeastern State University will open a new college this fall semester created specifically for non-traditional students who want to complete a college degree or advance in their careers. Housed on the Broken Arrow campus, the new College of Extended Learning empowers students to successfully fit schoolwork into schedules that are often full of other priorities.

“As a public university, Northeastern State University has an obligation to provide as much access as possible to everyone in our region, regardless of their circumstances,” said Dr. Martin Tadlock, Interim President at NSU. “The College of Extended Learning is designed to provide that access through quality courses and degree completion programs created to meet the needs of working adults in the Tulsa region.”

Degree programs in the College of Extended Learning focus on both quality and convenience, offering a mixture of accelerated eight-week courses; blended, online and weekend classes; and expanded support services. The College of Extended Learning not only offers adults an affordable, customized option to complete a degree but also serves as a valuable resource for the region’s employers.

“This is not just an education issue; it is an economic development issue,” said Dr. Christee Jenlink, dean of the NSU-Broken Arrow campus and interim dean of the College of Extended Learning. “Increasing the number of college graduates in the Tulsa region provides companies – both existing and new – with the talented workforce they need to meet the demands of today’s global economy.”

For enrollment information, contact Kris Rider at (918) 449-6225 or riderka@nsuok.edu.
